KSE Review: KSE-100 up 384 pts on SECP’s mild view towards brokers
KARACHI: The Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE)s performance during the week was better compared to the previous week as the KSE 100 index closed at 11,655.64 points and gained 384.05 points as compared with previous weeks close of 11,271.59 points. Rahil Khanani, analyst at Shahzad Chamdia Securities in his comments over the KSE 30 index said it closed at 14,564.44 points and gained 549.88 points as compared with previous weeks close of 14,014.56 points. Trading activity was dull this week as compared with the previous week, as the average ready market volume gained by 12.11 percent to 127.46 million shares as compared to previous weeks volume of 113.69 million shares. The average Future market volume declined by 35.19 percent to 47.91 million shares as compared with previous weeks volume of 73.93 million shares.
Rubbermaid: Set to bounce?
Newell Rubbermaid (NYSE: NWL), which is trading near multi-year highs, has caught the attention of contrarian and technician Chris Johnson, money manager and editor of Insightful Investor. In addition to its Rubbermaid brand, the consumer products firm makes consumer products under names such as Sharpie, Paper Mate, and Lenox. The advisor is impressed with the stock's relative strength, noting that the shares are up 7.4% for 2007, while the S&P 500 is down slightly. As a contrarian, he notes, "Despite this strong performance, there is a healthy amount of negative sentiment toward the stock, according to a number of indicators." One sign that the stock is out of favor notes Johnson is its put/call ratio, which he says indicates that the options crowd is extremely pessimistic.

March ISM's factory gauge came in at 50.9 down from 52.3 the previous month. It remains just barely above the important 50 level. Most of the internal figures were weak as well. The new orders index fell to 51.6 from 54.9. The Production Index fell to 53 from 54.1 and the Employment Index fell to 48.7 from 51.1. Even the Prices Paid Index fell to 65.5 from 69. The ISM's non-manufacturing index fell to 52.4 in March, the lowest level in almost four years. Not the best of reports. The Labor Department reported the jobless rate fell to 4.4%. Employment increased 180,000 that followed an 113,000 rise in February. .
