How high can you go?

I AM old enough to remember the collapse of Estate Mortgage. Thousands of retirees lost their nest eggs through a mortgage trust that paid above-average income returns, invested in dodgy property developments and collapsed when the property market slowed.

Sound familiar? While not a mortgage trust, the parallels with Fincorp are all there.

The lure of high returns can be irresistible for self-funded retirees wanting to earn every dollar they can to pay for their retirement. But sometimes chasing the very top returns just isn't worth it.

Also, it is imperative you understand where your money is going to earn that high return for you. A "term deposit" sounds safe but if your money is lent to property developers (who can't raise funds from traditional financiers) prepared to pay a higher interest rate, then the risk levels rise dramatically.

ICICI Bank volume growth will slow down: Emkay

Kashyap Jhaveri of Emkay Stock Broking feels that that the volume growth of ICICI bank will significantly slow down from the current level in time to come.

He feels that in terms of margins, there would be barely any protection on a QoQ comparative basis, but on a YoY basis, there might be some expansion in a couple of banks.

According to him State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank are the banks to watch out for.

Excerpts from CNBC-TV18's exclusive interview with Kashyap Jhaveri:

Q: Would you say that for the sector as a whole both volumes and margins are likely to be under pressure because of the rate hikes, the CRR hikes and the provisioning norms getting tighter?

A: I believe that in terms of volumes, we have already started seeing contraction.

Craig Crawford‘s 1600: 2008’s Hot New Topic

Even if this spring's roller-coaster weather doesn't put global warming on the national agenda for most Americans, the Supreme Court has now made sure the issue will be front and center in the presidential campaign.

Last week, in a big blow to George W. Bush's firm stand against economic regulation, the court told the EPA to reconsider its longstanding decision against regulating carbon dioxide or other pollutants contributing to climate change. Essentially, the court told the administration it does in fact have powers it says it doesn't have. That has been a comfortable political position for Bush and many Republicans, who have long argued that it would harm the economy to impose mandatory controls on greenhouse gases — the emissions from cars, trucks and factories that trap heat close to Earth's surface.
