Maguire Properties Announces Disposition of San Diego Office Buildings
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Maguire Properties, Inc. (NYSE:MPG), a Southern California focused real estate investment trust, today announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell Pacific Center, a 438,960 square foot office property in Mission Valley, California and Wateridge Plaza, a 268,957 square foot office property in Sorrento Mesa, California. The total sales price is over $298 million and the disposition is expected to close in the second quarter of 2007. This disposition is part of the Company's previously announced plan to dispose of several existing office properties and use the net proceeds from the sales to fund part of the cost of the acquisition of the downtown Los Angeles and Orange County portfolio from Equity Office Properties and to reduce debt. The main site under consideration for a new city hall appears to be an Orange County Transportation Authority park-and-ride bus station on Avocado Avenue at San Joaquin Hills Road. The council will vote on whether to hire Los Angeles firm DMJM Design to create a site plan for the parcel and do rough cost estimates for moving the bus center and building a city hall.It would cost $42,000 to hire the firm, which would come up with several options for the site.WHAT TO EXPECTThe council probably will vote to do the site plan, because there aren't a lot of other options for where to put a city hall at the moment.JOHN WAYNE CENTENNIALWith the city's own centennial out of the way, another big 100th birthday is coming up: John Wayne's. The Newport Beach Film Festival and the city's conference and visitors bureau will hold a retrospective of several Wayne films and a dinner at the Balboa Bay Club to celebrate the man a city staff report called "undoubtedly the most well-known person ever to reside in Newport Beach."The council will decide whether to spend $75,000 to become an official sponsor of the festivities.

Mylan Laboratories Inc. was among the stocks pulling the Standard & Poor's 500 Index higher in midday trading Tuesday after the drug maker raised its profit forecast because of strong sales of generic drugs. Shares of the Canonsburg, Pa.-based company rose 65 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $21.85 to New York Stock Exchange. Another gainer was Autodesk Inc., which rose $1.12, or 2.9 percent, to $39.95 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. A Goldman Sachs analyst upgraded the San Rafael, Calif.-based software maker. Shares of Applied Materials Inc. rose after Banc of America Securities analyst Mark F. Fitzgerald upgraded the Santa Clara, Calif.-based semiconductor equipment maker to "Buy" from "Neutral." Fitzgerald said the company will sign a lot more solar power contracts than people think.
Rich nations urged to help Africa adapt to climate change
Developed countries should step up their efforts in assisting African countries adapt to the devastating effects of climate change, a United Nations senior official said here Tuesday. UN Environment Program (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner said poor nations especially in Africa are experiencing natural calamities as a result of climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions mainly by the rich states. "Some measures of climate change is however a reality that the world must already live with. That reality requires assistance for Africa to adapt," Steiner told journalists in Nairobi during the release of the regional report by Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Nairobi. The UNEP chief said climate change is already affecting many parts of Africa and will get worse if the global community does not commit itself immediately to combat that change.
